Year of JubileeGod & Scripture
Leviticus 25:10 “Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan”
As I said in Potential = Price, every 50 years the Israelites were to have a Year of Jubilee, where each person was to return to his home and the land they previously possessed. All slaves were released to go back to their families and all leased land would go back to their owners…but only for that year.
This was done so that any Israelite who became poor and had to sell his property or sell himself as a slave, would not totally lose everything. He would still keep his ‘citizenship’ to Israel, meaning that every 50 years he could go back and enjoy the land he previously owned.
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor – Isaiah 61: 1-2
The Year of Jubilee was the year of the Lord’s favor, where slaves became free men, where the poor enjoyed their properties again, and the lonely saw their families again.
Mankind lost its inheritance when it sold itself to sin. We have all done it, we have all sold ourselves into slavery, become slaves of sin and so fallen short of the glory of God. We are like slaves who only get to experience what we had through the temporary and fleeting pleasures of life.
The good news is that through Christ we enter into a Year of Jubilee. Where our freedom is restored to us, where our inheritance is given back to us and where we find belonging in God’s family. Christ’s Year of Jubilee though is an everlasting year, it is a 1000 year reign, meaning it will endure forever.
