The Trouble with Income

Proverbs 10:22 “The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it”

It is true that the ‘wicked’ can prosper and appear very blessed, and the ‘righteous’ can receive toil and burdens in life. The Bible says this over and over, that the ways of the world do not favour the righteous over the wicked, each receives whatever life pays out to them.

However, there is a principle in scripture whereby where you get your income and blessing from, from God or from the world, there will be a certain amount of trouble attached to it.

Proverbs 15:6 “The house of the righteous contains great treasure, but the income of the wicked brings them trouble”

These verses say that the wicked still get income, they still might become wealthy and appear blessed, but it also brings them trouble. Whereas for the righteous who are blessed by God, scripture says that God adds no trouble to it. This means that there is no heartache attached to it, no sorrow attached to it. God blesses financially/practically, but more importantly he allows you to truly enjoy that blessing.

How terrible it must be to have wealth but never truly enjoy it.

As a Christian I do not trust God with my finances in the hope that he will multiply them, I trust him because I know that the more I give to God, the less trouble and heartache I find in life. When we try to find joy and fulfilment through our income, jobs, wealth and other worldly ways, we just receive trouble in the form of discontentment and unfulfilment. In short that ‘blessing’ of income is actually a burden because it causes more grief through dissatisfaction and emptiness.

Ecclesiastes 3:13 “That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God”
