The Trouble With HonestyConflict
Genesis 30:33 “And my honesty will testify for me in the future…”
The Bible gives strong instruction to a life of honesty and integrity. Often I find that being truly honest is difficult because it puts you in situations you don’t want to be in. Being honest makes you feel obliged to share things you kinda don’t want to share. But to tell something other than the truth would be lying and be not being true to yourself.
At my work there have been times where I have had to be honest and share that I have made a mistake, rather than fixing it on the quiet. That’s really hard to do because I know that being honest and sharing all in that moment will give me more grief than if I kept it hidden. I bet this is how Joseph felt when he had his dreams. Many think that he should not have shared them, he should not have told his brothers so bluntly but instead kept them to himself. But then isn’t that hiding your true self? Imagine if you had a great dream where you were sure God was speaking to you, wouldn’t you want to share it?
Joseph’s honesty landed him in trouble.
I have often felt that where I have honestly shared my thoughts and feelings I have felt convicted for having them. I have felt like I shouldn’t have said it, I shouldn’t have expressed my true feelings but just made something up instead. What people in this situation need is for someone to truly understand them and see things from their perspective. After hearing Joseph’s dream, his father Jacob got angry at first, but then it says that ‘he kept the matter in mind’.
Genesis 37:11 “His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind”
Jacob tried to understand Joseph and ultimately knew that he was just being honest, he was simply expressing the dream that he had. Joseph had no control over the dream or his destiny, it wasn’t his choice…he was just being honest! So the next time you find someone being brutallly and naively honest, lets understand that they are just being true to themselves and trying to express what is inside of them.
