Signs of ConfirmationGuidance
Proverbs 16:33 “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD”
When the disciples came to select a new disciple to replace Judas, how do you think they went about it? A big board meeting? A vote? Lots of praying?….nope, they threw some dice! This might seem very odd to us today and a very bizarre way of making decisions, but back in the day casting lots was a genuine method for testing the will of God. God did not come down and convict them, he did not tell them off doing it, in fact he used this method as a way of communicating his will to his followers!
Acts 1:26 “Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles”
I’m not saying that we should all start walking round with dice in our pockets, and every time we need to make a decision we cast them before God, but I do believe there are times when you can ask to give you confirmation signs. The Old Testament version of this is called ‘laying a fleece out’, from when Gideon laid a fleece out overnight to test the will of God. People have historically asked God to do certain things to make his will clear to them.
I remember asking God to confirm something to me by putting someone in my life who had the same struggle that I did. The next day, which was a Sunday, unbeknown to me a young guy was preaching at our church. I wondered if this might be ‘the person’ who I had prayed about; and indeed after a short conversation this individual did share a common struggle with me.
So if you are facing a decision point or are finding it hard to discern the will of God in a certain situation, then it is quite Biblical to ask God to confirm it through various circumstances. The answer always comes through peace in your Spirit though, so these ‘signs of confirmation’ simply help you realize the answer that has been there all along.
