Proverbs 24:16 “…for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again…”
The righteous are not righteous because they never fall. Romans 3:23 says that we ALL have fallen short of the glory of God, and not just one time either, the likelihood is that we will continue to fall and fail throughout our lives. Hopefully the falls and stumbles get smaller and less frequent, but we will still keep falling.
The righteous are not righteous because they rise again either. Your righteousness is not based on your efforts to defeat sin in your life. Whilst it is very admirable and encouraged by God to keep rising after falling, it is not that action that credits us with righteousness.
The righteous are righteous because of WHY they rise again. The WHY is because we have faith in a God who is greater than our failures. We have faith that God can transform us into his image. We have faith that there is something greater to live for. We have faith that our debt has been paid through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. It is our faith alone that credits our righteousness.
So if you find yourself constantly falling and failing, simply continue to keep rising again. God is not disappointed that you fall and fail, he is only concerned that you continue to rise again and why you choose to rise again. It can feel so much easier to stay down in the place where we fell. Its easy to accept that we may never change and what’s the point trying. But our Father rejoices when you make the choice to rise again.
