God’s Name is Jealous

God's Nature

Exodus 34:14 “Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God”

God is so jealous for us in his nature that here in Exodus he actually calls himself by the name ‘Jealous’! Put that alongside his other names and you get a real sense of how much God longs for us. Call him Yahweh, call him Jehovah-Jireh, call him El-Shaddai or even call him Jealous.

Isn’t jealousy a bad thing?

Now God’s form of jealousy is not like ours which is pitiful and immature. We are jealous because we can’t have something that we want, or when someone is better than us, or has more than us. God’s jealousy can only be expressed by him. It means to demand ‘exclusive service’. God’s jealousy for us is rooted in him wanting us to love and serve him and him alone. That’s why he instructs us to worship no other, because he has created us to worship him along with all creation.

Jealous demands exclusive service

Jeremiah 15:1 indicates that Moses and Samuel were the two people closest/most influential to God out of everyone, and that is because they were both dedicated to God’s purpose from birth. That is how God wants us to live, to dedicate all of our lives, every year, every season, every high and every low to the purpose of God. God’s jealousy demands exclusive service from us.
