Draw NearRelationship with God
James 4:8 “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you…”
For a long time now this has been my favourite verse in all of scripture. Why? Because it taught me from a teenager that if I wanted to have a thriving and growing relationship with God, then I had to put the work in, I had to make the first move, I had to want God.
Who draws near first?..you do!
A lot of the time we expect our relationship with God to be ‘God prompts us and we respond’. Often it is like that but I find it is more like; ‘You push into God, and God pushes back‘. It means that God is ready and waiting for us to encounter him, it just depends on whether we are actually going to pursue him or not.
Exodus 3:3 “So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight–why the bush does not burn up”
We all desire a burning bush moment with God. We all desire to hear him speak and direct us very clearly. We all desire to feel his presence strongly. Moses had a burning bush experience…but he had to go over to it to receive the experience. What if Moses couldn’t be bothered? What if he never went over but continued on his journey? What is he thought “I’ll do it later“? He would have missed his burning bush experience, he may never have been sent to Egypt and the Israelites may never have been freed from slavery.
We all desire burning bush experiences, but how often do we pursue God? How often do we draw near, push into him, wait on his presence? We may be missing so many burning bush experiences simply because we are not drawing near to God at the right time.
The call to draw near places your relationship with God in your hands. You are in control. How intimate you want to be, how much you want to hear from God, how much you want to encounter God is entirely dependent on you! God is ready and waiting, he is wanting you to draw near.
