Army of DefectorsWeekly Posts
1 Chronicles 12:8 “Some Gadites defected to David at his stronghold in the wilderness…”
Read through 1 Chronicles 12 and you will see that it is the amazing account of David building an army of defectors. Warriors from all different armies came to join David in his battle to be King against Saul. They were all failures; according to their own army they were traitors and defectors but they all rallied around David for his Kingdom purpose.
1 Chronicles 12:22 “Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God”
David’s army is just like our army; The Church. It is an army built of defectors. We used to be sold as slaves to sin, we used to be enemies of God but now through Christ we are part of his family and army. We are an army of failures, an army of mistakes, an army of sinners.
We all come from a background of failure, we all feel inadequate and not up to the job but that is what the Kingdom of God is about. Life is about experiencing God’s power through our weakness. In fact God’s power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor 12:9).
1 Chronicles 12:38 “All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king.
Even though we are all weak, all failures, all sinners, all defectors, we have come together in unison and one accord to make Christ King over our lives. Just as the warriors were fully determined to make David King of Israel, we are fully determined to make Christ King over our lives and over the entire world.
Brian Houston spoke a great message at Hillsong London the other week on Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them”. He pointed out that where two can agree, any more can only gather, and gather around Jesus. We come together as different people, from different backgrounds, from different armies, but we come together for one purpose: to make Christ King!
1 Chronicles 12:40 “Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen”
The great thing about it is that even though each person was a defector, they were not useless! They came with great gifts and strengths, becoming leaders in a David’s armies and even providing support through food supplies. Some of their gifts were:
- Being able to use spear and sword in both hands
- Great leaders of 100 or even 1000 troops
- Swift as gazelles in the mountains
- Some men a match for 100 or 1000 soldiers
- Men of understanding and knowing the times
- Experienced soldiers with every type of weapon
- Being able to shoot arrows and sling stones in both hands
- Providing supplies and support from other lands
These men were by far not useless, and this represents us! Even though we are sinners, we have all made mistakes and failed repeatedly, we have been given such amazing strengths and gifts. Just take a moment to think about what God has gifted you at, made you good at, given you skills in? That is your weapon to be used for his Kingdom purpose.
