Sin Ingredient 3/3 – PrideDaily Thoughts
Matthew 26:23 “Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me”
The last supper reveals three of the devil’s tactics for tempting man and leading him astray. They are the ingredients necessary for sin, the conditions required for our failure.
Sin Ingredient 3/3 – Pride
Picture this, you are sat round the dinner table with Jesus and other friends. Both you and Jesus reach for a food bowl at the very same time…What do you do? “Sorry Jesus, you first” would be the appropriate response. You would never just barge in there, neglecting table manners and polite protocol, especially in the presence of Jesus! Judas did exactly that.
I believe this passage displays the complacency and pride of Judas that led to his downfall. When we place too much confidence and authority on ourselves, we are easily led astray because we think “It’s okay…I can manage“. We get too comfortable with the things of God, as Judas was with Jesus. We lack discipline and a zeal for holiness.
Romans 7:11 “For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death”
Sin seizes the opportunity that we pridefully and complacently let it have. We draw boundaries in our head of what we think is okay. “I’ll just have a quick look…I’ll just mention it…It’s not a big deal” we say and in the flash of a second we have pursued a sinful course of action. Stay humbled, stay disciplined & put no confidence in the flesh! (Phil 3:3)
