Rend your Heart (1/2)Daily Thoughts
Joel 2:13 “Rend your heart and not your garments”
In scripture we often see God as being a bit harsh with his servants. He would call them to action and service, but then instantly oppose them for their attitude.
Numbers 22:20-22 “…Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you”…But God was very angry when he went”
Now this does seem a bit mean on God’s part; he gives Balaam the go ahead to travel with these mean then instantly gets angry when he goes! God called Moses from the burning bush to go to Egypt, then all of a sudden tries to kill him on-route! (Ex 4:24) What’s going on?
What’s happening is that God is calling them to serve him, but opposing their attitude when they go. Moses was complacent in not circumcising his son, and I think Balaam was secretly desiring a reward (although it’s not explicit).
God wants our hearts to love and serve him, but without selfish ambition and pride. Like tearing paper, it is both the pull to serve God and the opposition to leave our sin behind that rends our hearts.
It is not an easy cost to pay, but one we must allow to happen to serve God faithfully. Allow God to rend your heart.
