Father Figures #3 – CharacterDaily Thoughts
Matthew 23:9 “And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven”
1 Corinthians 4:15 “…you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel”
These two verses would seem to contradict each other, where the truth is that God; our one true Father, is seeking to express his fatherhood to us through certain ‘father figures‘ in our lives. God displays his love and guidance through many great men and women around us. Moses had a prominent father figure in his life, his father-in-law, who was known by three names:
Reuel = Friend of God
‘A Christ-like character from a friendship with God’
Moses father-in-law was also know as Reuel, which means ‘friend of God’ It shows he was a man whom God favored for his integrity and good character. Even though Reuel was a Midianite and so was not raised to know God, he displayed the fruit and character of God regardless.
Father figures are those that have a vibrant and active friendship with God, where the fruit is a loving and genuine character. It is their character and friendship with God which allows them to contribute into others lives, and makes them so cherished in the eyes of other individuals. Is your character being developed through an active friendship with God? Who do you look up to because of their character?
