Father Figures #2 – CherishedDaily Thoughts
Matthew 23:9 “And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven”
1 Corinthians 4:15 “…you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel”
These two verses would seem to contradict each other, where the truth is that God; our one true Father, is seeking to express his fatherhood to us through certain ‘father figures‘ in our lives. God displays his love and guidance through many great men and women around us. Moses had a prominent father figure in his life, his father-in-law, who was known by three names:
Hobab = Cherished
Moses’ father-in-law (some verses say brother-in-law) was also known as Hobab, which means ‘cherished’. Moses valued him and loved him dearly, as did the other Israelites.
Numbers 10:29 “Now Moses said to Hobab… Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things to Israel”
Moses begged his father-in-law and managed to persuade him to come on their journey with them. He was a very cherished individual. Like Moses’ father-in-law, father figures are people whom we cherish and value in our life. We look forward to seeing them and are excited to spend time with them. We choose them over all others and we cherish them for their contribution to our lives.
