Father Figures #1 – Contribute

Daily Thoughts

Matthew 23:9 “And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven”
1 Corinthians 4:15 “…you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel”

These two verses would seem to contradict each other, where the truth is that God; our one true Father, is seeking to express his fatherhood to us through certain ‘father figures‘ in our lives. God displays his love and guidance through many great men and women around us. Moses had a prominent father figure in his life, his father-in-law, who was known by three names:

Jethro = Abundance
‘The ability to contribute to others’ lives from your own’

Moses’ father-in-law was known as Jethro, which means ‘abundance’. Out of the abundance of his own life and experience, Jethro contributed to Moses’ life by giving him wisdom on how to lead the Israelites. It was Jethro who instructed Moses to designate leaders throughout the nation, to deal with the people’s’ issues.

Father figures are the great men and women of God who contribute to others out of the abundance of their wisdom and experience. They always have something to give, whether it be a wise perspective, a great story of faith or just a word of encouragement. Who do you contribute to?… and who contributes to you?

Who is your Father Figure?
