False Philosophies #3 – EqualityDaily Thoughts
Colossians 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ”
Our ‘false philosophies’ are actually built upon very normal things, ideologies that we taught and raised with, but often Jesus lived very differently…
Equality isn’t what we think it is.
In John 4 Jesus goes out of his way to talk with a Samaritan woman. He broke many social conventions (since Samaritans did not associate with Jews) to pour out his love and truth on her, despite her being a Samaritan. But then in Matthew 15 we read about a Canaanite woman begging Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter. The shocking thing is that Jesus first of all ignores her, and then he calls her a dog! (Matt 15:26)
It seems to me that Jesus’ version of equality isn’t the same as ours. It’s not that Jesus favored Samaritans over Canaanites, in fact their nationality had nothing to do with it. Jesus didn’t treat them differently or equally because of their nationality.
Jesus’ equality was based on the purpose of God’s will.
In the western world we are obsessed with equality and equal opportunities, but that’s not how God works. God will give opportunities to some and restrict them from others, he will give lots to some and little to others. Jesus reached out to the Samaritan woman because it was God’s will that her and her household would believe. Jesus ignored and insulted the Canaanite woman to challenge and test her in her faith.
