False Philosophies #2 – Payback

Daily Thoughts

Colossians 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ”

Our ‘false philosophies’ are actually built upon very normal things, ideologies that we taught and raised with, but often Jesus lived very differently…

Don’t pay it back…

Luke 14:12 “Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid”

What Jesus was saying is that if you have an opportunity to serve or bless someone, don’t just serve or bless those who could do it back to you, but instead serve and bless those who could not pay it back.

The problem is we often serve, bless and do favors for people on an “I owe you one” basis. Because they did something kind to us, we will do something kind to them. That’s not love, that’s just business. Loving service expects nothing back from those we bless and serve.

…Pay it forward.

When Elisha healed Naaman’s leprosy in 2 Kings 5, Naaman tried to give Elisha a gift to say thank you…but Elisha would accept nothing in return. He knew that a payment for the miracle would cancel it out, but leaving it as an act of unconditional love would remain as a reminder to Naaman for the rest of his life. Don’t accept acts of service as a payment for your service. Let them all be out of love and constantly being paid forward.

Luke 14:13 “But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.”
