Faith not Fruit

Genesis 21:13 “I will make the son [Ishmael] of the slave [Hagar] into a nation also, because he is your offspring”

Interesting how God blessed the life of Ishmael, making him into great nation even though he was not the ‘chosen‘ son for Abraham. What is even more interesting is that Ishmael had twelve sons that became twelve tribal rulers, just like Isaac did (through Jacob).

Genesis 25:16 “These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers according to their settlements and camps”

Isn’t it interesting that the stories of each of them are so similar? Almost as if being God‘s chosen son made no difference? But then that’s it, because I think we always assume that the value of our christian life is in our fruit, how our life looks to others.

It‘s wrong to think and believe that because we will encounter people who live very ‘fruitful’ lives but don‘t know God. In those times we get confused because it seems like our faith makes no difference to life compared to others!

But faith is not about what is seen, the visible quality/fruit of life, it‘s about what is unseen, living for God. The lives of Ishmael and Isaac looked very similar, both became great nations, but only one was God‘s people.

Don’t measure your life by worldly measurements, but by heavenly ones!
