Do you have Favor?

Church & Relationships

1 Samuel 2:26 “And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with men”

One thing that both Jesus and Samuel has in common was the favor on their life, not just with God but with people too! I think that is something that we forget sometimes, that we are so focused on pleasing God and living right that we forget to win the favor of the people around us.

Favor with people was critical for both Jesus and Samuel for many reasons, one of which is that they both brought large changes to their people. Samuel brought change by introducing the monarchy to the nation of Israel by anointing both King Saul & King David. Jesus in essence introduced a spiritual monarchy since he is the King of Kings, but really he brought a change of covenant and entire new way in which we commune with God.

As I expressed in Temples & Palaces there is a side of our life dedicated to pleasing God; our Temple and a side which pleases people; our Palace. Having favor with people is so important as it builds a bridge on which we can transport our message to them. People will not accept our Temple theology if they do not value our Palace lifestyle. Sadly it can be all too easy to lose favor with people and come into conflict with them.

We often think that Jesus was a complete rebel, and in essence he was! However, for the first 30 years of his life, he was building favor with God and men. Only in the last 3 years did he use his favor to implement change. How often do we rush into opportunities and push change without the trust and favor of others.

Building favor with people is not a matter of ‘people pleasing’ which scripture challenges. People pleasing is all about us, building favor is all about others. We desire to build favor where we seek to serve and save, it’s all about them. Is it time to examine your life to see where you are lacking favor?…
